According to Italian regulation (D.Lgs 30/2007), EU/EEA/EFTA citizens who intend to stay in Italy for more than 3 months are required to apply for residency registration at the local municipality (“Comune”, which is one of the administrative divisions in Italy, equivalent to a city council or municipality). In order to register their residency, applicants are required to show proof of the work/study activity they are carrying out in Italy, or alternatively proof of sufficient economic funds to support their stay in Italy.
In case the EU/EEA/EFTA citizen does not wish to register his/her permanent residency in Italy, there is a possibility to opt for “temporary residency registration” at the local municipality that has jurisdiction over the place where the applicants are temporarily living.
In order to be able to apply for the temporary residency registration, the EU/EEA/EFTA citizen must fall into one of the following categories:
Documentation required to apply for the temporary registration varies depending on the category. Once the application has been approved by the local municipality, the EU/EEA/EFTA citizen will be able to procure a certificate attesting the temporary registration in Italy. It is important to note that this type of temporary residency registration does not allow the EU/EEA/EFTA citizen to subsequently apply for the Italian ID card (CIE) nor for the health card (tessera sanitaria).
Note: The above rules only apply to EU/EEA/EFTA citizens. Third-country nationals are subject to different rules.
