The Schengen Borders Code (Regulation (EC) No 562/2006) lays down a single set of common rules on external border checks on persons, entry requirements and duration of stays in the Schengen Area.

To ensure that the rules of the Schengen Borders Code are applied in the same way by all the Member States’ authorities, in 2006 the Commission established a common “Practical Handbook for Border Guards (Schengen Handbook – Recommendation of 6 November 2006 (C(2006)5186 final)”. The Practical Handbook lays down guidelines, best practices, and recommendations relating to the performance of border guard duties in the Schengen States. The goal is to ensure that Community rules on border controls are implemented in a uniform way by all national authorities competent for carrying out border control tasks.
The Practical Handbook has been established in 2006 and since then has been amended several times (2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2018)
