The study visa can be issued for the following categories:
Students enrolling in full Italian University Programs
You need to contact the school office of the Italian Consulate to accomplish with all the requirements regulated by the M.I.U.R. (Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research) for enrolling in a full Italian University program.
Appointments for a visa can be requested only upon confirmation of the admission to the entrance exam at an Italian University.
Long term visa application form and one recent passport size picture (1”3/8 x 1”3/4, full front view, white background).
Passport valid at least three months over the planned stay in Italy and a photocopy of relevant pages;
current student ID and a copy
one way flight reservation;
copy of declaration of value (dichiarazione di valore), if applicable, issued by the School Office of the Italian Consulate/Embassy having jurisdiction over the University/School that issued the certificate;
Declaration of the availability in Italy of appropriate lodgings. In case the applicant will be staying with friends/family, a letter of invitation is required along with a copy of the host’s ID (“Permit of stay” for non-European Union citizens);
Proof of financial means of support in Italy of no less than 442,30 Euro monthly (approximately 600 USD) The availability can be proven through:
Bank letter showing the details of the personal bank account of the student;
Bank letter showing the details of a joint bank account in the name of both the student and his/her family;
an official letter from the Financial Aid Advisor, stating the amount granted for that semester and the date of disbursement;
Schengen medical insurance: the letter from the insurance company must state that you will be covered for all medical expenses, hospitalization and repatriation for at least 30,000 euro during your stay in Europe. If your current insurance company does not provide such coverage, you are requested to find an international insurance
Visa fee (EUR 116)
Students independently attending a course on Italian Language/Culture
Long term visa application form and one recent passport size picture (1”3/8 x 1”3/4, full front view, white background).
Passport valid at least three months over the planned stay in Italy and a photocopy of relevant pages;
Copy of driver’s license, State ID, State Income Tax or last 3 months utility bills;
One way flight reservation;
letter of acceptance from the host Institution/School in Italy, specifying the type of course, number of weekly hours (at least 20 hours) and dates (longer than 90 days) – make sure the school qualifies for the visa
Transcript of previous studies in your Home Country;
Declaration of the availability in Italy of appropriate lodgings. In case the applicant will be staying with friends/family, a letter of invitation is required along with a copy of the host’s ID (“Permit of stay” for non-European Union citizens);
Proof of financial means of support in Italy of no less than € 27.89 per day (approximately 35 USD) for each day of the duration of the study program. The availability can be proven through:
Bank letter showing the details of the personal bank account of the student;
Bank letter showing the details of a joint bank account in the name of both the student and his/her family;
an official letter from the Financial Aid Advisor, stating the amount granted for that semester and the date of disbursement;
Schengen medical insurance: the letter from the insurance company must state that you will be covered for all medical expenses, hospitalization and repatriation for at least 30,000 euro during your stay in Europe. If your current insurance company does not provide such coverage, you are requested to find an international insurance

Students participating in study abroad programs
Long term visa application form and one recent passport size picture (1”3/8 x 1”3/4, full front view, white background).
Passport (valid at least 90 days beyond the expiration date of the visa) and photocopy of the main page.
Photocopy of student’s ID and driver’s license (or state ID).
Letter filled out from the University in Italy directed to the Visa Office of the Italian, confirming the enrolment of the student, program dates, duration, weekly hours of attendance (minimum 20 hours a week) and specifying the address of the student’s accommodation.
Letter from the University in Country of Residence, addressed to the Visa Office of the Italian Consulate, specifying that the student is officially enrolled with said University and confirming his/her enrolment in the University Study Abroad Program in Italy. The letter should also indicate the address of the University in Italy, program dates and duration.
Personal bank letter or bank statement on its official letterhead, indicating the total amount of funds in their personal account (no joint bank accounts). Please note that the minimum amount of funds required to study in Italy is about 50 dollars per day (to cover basic expenses in Italy and repatriation costs).
Personal credit card statement with indication of credit limit.
Students who have been granted a scholarship/financial aid are required to provide a letter from the University stating the amount and the date of disbursement.
Schengen medical insurance: the letter from the insurance company must state that you will be covered for all medical expenses, hospitalization and repatriation for at least 30,000 euro during your stay in Europe. If your current insurance company does not provide such coverage, you are requested to find an international insurance

It is advisable apply for the visa at least 3 months before your arrival in Italy. The processing time of the application may take between 1–4 weeks and sometimes longer.
NEXT STEPS AFTER THE VISA IS OBTAINED
Once the visa is obtained, you must apply for a residence permit for reason of study within eight days of arriving in Italy.
To obtain a residence permit, you must first submit your file to the Post Office (Ufficio Postale – Sportello Amico), together with your passport and supporting documents. Your file will be sent to the Immigration Police Headquarters (Questura) and you will receive an appointment to go the Police, together with an application receipt that you should keep until the end of the process (ita will be required to collect the residence permit once ready).
